This dino A to Z puzzle is a great way for your little paleontologist to dig up lots of alphabet learning fun!

Puzzles are one of the best toys you can give children. It helps them build their spatial and logical reasoning skills. It also builds the many fine motor skills they’ll later need when they are ready to write their letters.

This puzzle is made for ages two and up, so there are no dangerous pieces that can harm little ones. Expect it to be challenging with very little children. You may need to get some cardstock and draw the outline of the pieces with the letters on each shape to begin with, and they are still likely to need assistance. In time, though, they will grow into this puzzle and quickly learn to do it on their own.

It can be built in the tray, or older children may love the challenge of building it without the tray, making it into a free-standing 3D model.

Pros

– builds linguistic and math skills

– develops fine motor skills

– can be built in frame or freestanding

– safe for ages 2+

Cons

– may be challenging for very young

The Verdict

This is a great gift for any kid, and it meets several educational goals. It’s brightly colored, sturdy, and will last a long time as your child grows with the toy. It’s all-wood, doesn’t need batteries, and inspires lots of playtime and learning fun!

VTech Chomp and Count Dino

VTech Chomp and Count Dino
  • Dinosaur toy recognizes the eight brightly colored food pieces as you feed him; provides fun responses as he eats each piece
  • Baby learning toy dinosaur introduces colors, foods, shapes and counting; play in either counting or meal mode
  • Early learning center with 130+ songs, melodies, sounds and phrases; kids can answer dino's questions with the correct food pieces
  • 5 shape buttons teach shapes and numbers or rotate the spinning disc to play sing-along songs; pull toy interacts as it is pulled or pushed along

This adorable dinosaur is the perfect learning toy for little ones working on colors, words for foods, names of shapes, and counting skills. There are two modes – one for counting and the other for “feeding time”.

The Chomp and Count Dino has over 130 songs, sounds, and phrases. It even quizzes kids, who can answer with the correct food pieces.

In addition, it can work as a pull toy! There is so much to do with this cute little dinosaur!

It does require batteries – 2 AA. There are demo batteries included, but you’ll need new ones pretty soon after receiving the toy, so it might be best to just purchase them together.

This is best suited for kids from 1 to 3. Reviewers suggest that you do have to push the little food disks into the dino’s mouth pretty far for it to be able to “read” it properly, so bracing it against the couch or a wall may help when they are playing with that function of the toy.

Kids love this toy!

Pros

– lots of learning games

– doubles as a pull toy

– interactive

– kids love it

Cons

– batteries required

– songs and sounds are less fun for adults

The Verdict

This is a good learning toy that often comes at a decent price. It’s fun, it’s colorful, it’s interactive, and it’s a dinosaur! If your little one enjoys lights, music, and sounds, they are going to really enjoy this cute little guy!

These little alphabet dinos are great for teaching your child about the letters of the alphabet! Each dinosaur represents a letter with one side showing the capital, and the lowercase letter on the other side. The two pieces can be split apart, hidden, mixed, and put back together. The heads and tails are not self-correcting, though – each tail and head will fit with all of the others.

There are 52 total pieces, so they can also be used in counting games. You can use them in talking about sorting and identifying colors, too. The pulling and pushing your little one will have to do to pair these up is so good for their fine motor skills, too! It will build those hand and wrist muscles they’ll need to write with quickly!

These don’t light up or make noises but these are the kinds of toys kids can use in any imaginative play! They are not only great for their intended purpose, but they are fun little sturdy dinos to add to any playset. Your children will love adding all the fun and their own imaginative play to these little dinos!

They may too small for very little children and present a choking hazard, though, so they aren’t intended for ages under three.

Pros

– can be used in lots of ways

– separates letters by capital/lowercase

– provides open-ended play

– builds fine motor skills

Cons

– not for kids under 3

The Verdict

These dinos are great for kids who aren’t reading yet and who could also use something fun to help build their fine motor skills. These colorful dinos can be sorted, matched, and alphabetized for hours of entertainment! They may not be suitable for kids under three, though.

Best for Kids Ages 5 to 7

This is such a cool set! It combines two things almost every kids loves – tools and dinosaurs. This is a great set for kids who enjoy STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

These toys are not just fun, either. They provide lots of stimulation for puzzle and problem-solving skills. They build fine motor skills by strengthening muscles in fingers, hands, wrists, and arms. They are so fun to take apart and rebuild!

And they are great for social play. There are 6 dinosaurs – 2 tyrannosaurs, 2 ceratopsians, and 2 brontosauruses (trust us… it matters). There are also 6 screwdrivers and 6 wrenches. There are 218 total pieces in this set. They come fully assembled, so your child can start taking them apart the minute they arrive.

Some parents did comment, though, that 6 is just too many for one child. The plastic is a bit flimsy, and the wrench isn’t used much. One other thing reviewers don’t like is that there are no instructions or detailed images to aid in assembly or disassembly.

Pros

– great for building fine motor skills

– good for puzzle and logic skills

– nice intro to STEM

– great for multiple kids

Cons

– plastic is a bit flimsy

– no use for the wrench

– no instructions included

The Verdict

This is a cute toy that enhances a lot of skills as long as you don’t have kids who will play roughly with the pieces, put small pieces in their mouths or noses, or expect to follow directions rather than figuring things out on their own. They are great for small groups of kids, and lots of reviewers even say these would be perfect for party favors.

National Geographic Ultimate Dinosaur Play Sand

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Dinosaur Play Sand - 2 Pounds of Play Sand, 6 Molds, 6 Dinosaur Figures, A Kinetic Sensory Sand Activity Kit for Boys and Girls
  • Sensory sand. This sand for kids is kinetic and only sticks to itself, not you; the perpetually “wet” feel of this play sand makes it a great sensory activity
  • Real specimen inside! This kit also includes a real coprolite fossil that’s millions of years old
  • 2 pound sand set with diorama. The packaging converts to a play area with diorama, kids can make dinosaur shapes in the sand using the 6 dino-shaped molds and play with the 6 dinosaur action figures...
  • Non-toxic & mess-free! Sand is hypoallergenic, gluten-free, and non-toxic; it’s also super easy to clean up

This set has 2 pounds of kinetic sand, 6 dinosaur molds, and 6 dinosaur figures. But that’s not all!

If you’ve never played with kinetic sand, you are missing out, first of all. It feels amazing. It’s incredibly soft, it doesn’t dry out, it can be shaped easily, and yet it’s fun and squishy. It’s amazing for sensory play for most kids.

On top of the sand, though, this playset has dinosaur figures to bury, search, and “discover” over and over again by your little paleontologist. They’ll spend hours excavating from the “fossils” they create using the molds.

But wait – that’s still not all!

Two words: petrified poop.

We know – it’s not that exciting to us either, but for some reason, kids this age think poop is one of the most interesting topics on the planet. We can’t explain it. We just know they are fascinated by it.

And this set comes with its own certified, bonafide bit of fossilized poop.

If that’s not worth the whole set to your kids, we don’t know what will be.

There’s also a learning guide, and because it’s made by National Geographic, you know kids will love it. If they don’t, national Geographic always offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee!

It doesn’t come in a container with a lid, though, so you may want to get one along with this.

Pros

– kinetic sand

– dinosaur molds

– dino “action figures”

– Poop. Yep, poop.

– Nat. Geo. learning guide

Cons

– encourages kids to talk about poop

– doesn’t come with a lid

The Verdict

This is a great set for kids who love kinetic sand, molds, and dinosaurs! It’s hard to go wrong with that combination. You’ll need a bigger container, with a lid, and possibly a mat for under the kit for mess containment, but this is a great set for just about any kid.

National Geographic Dino Fossil Dig Kit

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Dino Fossil Dig Kit – Excavate 3 real fossils including Dinosaur Bones & Mosasaur Teeth - Great Jurassic Science gift for Paleontology and Archeology enthusiasts of any age
  • REAL DINOSAUR FOSSILS - Kids will discover 3 real dinosaur fossils! Dig up a dinosaur bone, mosasaur tooth, and dinosaur poop for your rock collection
  • AN EDUCATIONAL ADVENTURE - Children become immersed in the prehistoric era and will discover amazing dinosaur facts with National Geographic’s full-color learning guide
  • HANDS-ON EXPLORATION - Become a paleontologist! This interactive archeological dig lets kids experience the thrill of discovery!
  • GREAT PARTY ACTIVITY - Just like unwrapping a gift, your child will love uncovering these real fossils and starting a rock and fossil collection

This is a different type of kit. There are lots of dig kits available, but this has always been one of the highest rated. The bricks are painted nicely, and reviewers say they are easier to dig fossils out of than many others.

There is one brick that contains 3 real fossils in each kit. The kit comes with archaeological excavating tools, a learning guide book, and a magnifying glass. Kids may find bones or teeth buried in the brick.

And don’t worry, this one also has poop! (Sorry.) In fact, the prehistoric poop seems to be even bigger in this kit, so brace yourselves.

This is NOT a clean activity! Set out newspapers, settle in, and have the vacuum handy for when you are finished.

Also, these kits don’t last forever. It’s a one-time activity for most – and it may take 5 minutes or 3 hours to dig out the fossils. You never know.

But we love that this is more meaningful than a craft or a toy. You get to hold (or not holding – thinking of the poop) an actual bit of history in your hand. That’s cool!

Pros

– quality brick compared to most kits

– comes with a learning guide

– archaeology dig tools

– comes w/ magnifying glass

Cons

– one-time activity

– super messy

– the poop is bigger

The Verdict

Kids. Love. These. Kits. This kit is great for kids who love either dinosaurs or archaeology. It’s not a toy that can be reused over and over, but there should be at least three keepsake fossils in each kit. It also comes with a National Geographic learning guide so kids can read about the animals from the kit for a long time to come.
